Making Peace with Aging…at any Age

Sunday, 27. June 2010

In our 20’s we need to establish a skincare regimen if we haven’t already done so.  This will ensure our skin looking fresh and youthful for years to come.  Proper cleansing and moisturizing routines are important.  Antioxidants and vitamins are your friends.

In our 30’s exfoliation is essential.  This is the time when skin discolorations and fine lines begin to show.  Exfoliation can help to minimize the effects of sun damage and some hormonal fluctuations either natural or related to pregnancy.  Our focus in this decade needs to be skin texture, tone, and color.  Anti-aging products with more than just one active ingredient are recommended.

In our 40’s our goal is nourishing and strengthening our skin’s natural defenses.  We need to use products that will promote firmness, elasticity and collagen production.  Forty is the new twenty, you know, so no worries at this age.   :-D

As were moving into the 50+ years, many believe what’s done is done.  Not so!  The science of skincare has advanced a great deal, and minimal downtime procedures are all the rage.  Turning our focus on minimizing irritation and maximizing hydration, green tea and hyaluronic acid are the must haves for this age.

Whatever your age – its no matter.  It’s only a number.  What counts is our attitude and beliefs about ourselves.  Beauty begins on the inside.  It’s an attitude – a state of mind.  It’s in the way you walk, talk, and relate to the world around you.  It’s an inner peace that radiates an outer confidence – an intriguing presence about someone.  You can’t find it in a lotion, potion or bottle.  It can’t be manufactured in a lab or purchased at Neiman Marcus.  It is true, genuine and pure.  It is a matter of the heart.

Have a fabulous week and holiday weekend!!  :-D

Taking it to the Mat…Carving out a Sacred Space

Thursday, 15. April 2010

I was tired today when I went to my mat.  Looking out the windows in the yoga studio brought refreshment and energy to my weariness.  Seeing the “regulars” in class brought comfort and connection.  We all come to our mats for an experience~to carve out a sacred space.

The music was like poetry~perfectly in tune with the postures.  The flow was graceful but strong, and I felt grounded as I moved through the vinyasas.

Sometimes we bring a lot of “stuff” to the mat.  Taking it to the edge, where pushing a little harder would be just enough, but any further would be too much.  We work through it, wring it out, and then leave the rest behind.  Walking away with new perspective, lighter hearts, and clearer minds…we are left feeling like the weight of the world has simply melted away.

I can’t wait to go to the mat tomorrow.  This is my sacred space.  In the midst of a room full of beautiful people, I carve out a place where I can just be.

April Is Stress Awareness Month

Monday, 12. April 2010

Do you ever use the phrase “Im so stressed out”?  I think we all have, and do quite frequently.  Even my thirteen year old talks about how stressed out she is!  We all experience the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of stress.

Whether its acute or chronic, finding ways to eleviate our frustration can soothe our weary minds.  Here are some of my favorites…

Take a deep breath…better yet…take many

Think before you speak; act

Take a walk…get some fresh air

Pray…Meditate…Dream

Call or meet with a friend or loved one

Put on some great music…dance and sing your heart out!

Take a power nap

Find the perfect journal and write in it

Yoga, yoga & more yoga :-D

Mr. Golden Sun…please shine down on me!

Sunday, 4. April 2010

Wasn’t this weekend glorious!  The warmth of the sun felt so good.  Its been a long long winter, and I think we’re all ready for some sun!  Getting adequate amounts of vitamin D these last couple of days makes us feel alive again!  I’m looking so forward to the next several months – this is my favorite time of year.

As wonderful as the sun is…we still need to take into consideration the damaging effects it can have on our skin.  UV rays penetrate the skin and damage our DNA, along with excessive collagen breakdown and changes in the micro-capillaries.  The skin becomes disorganized and weak.  What’s going on underneath, isn’t nearly as glamorous as what’s showing on the outside.  The kiss of the sun does have its risks.

Don’t forget to use caution when you’re outside enjoying good ole Mr. Sun.

  Remember to:

- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection

-Replace your sunscreen every year.  After a bottle is opened and exposed to heat, the active ingredients begin to break down reducing your UV protection.

- Apply your sunscreen at least a half hour before going out in the sun; reapplication should occur every couple of hours during exposure

- For all over body protection use at least 1 ounce, or a shot glassful of product

- Avoid the sun between the hours of 10 am – 2 pm when rays are strongest

- Wear sunglasses, hat, and protective clothing; carry an umbrella for added protection

- Apply sunscreen on a daily basis.  As long as there is light, you are receiving UV damage

Developing a healthy routine will ensure continued protection from the sun.  By consistently using sun protection, you are depositing a reservoir of protection in the skin.

Dancing in the Rain

Thursday, 25. March 2010

I recently saw a quote that said – Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning to dance in the rain…

So true, isn’t it?  To think  there aren’t going to be any storms in life would be foolish.  Hoping and praying they would just go away would be unrealistic.  So we need to find a way to to walk in and through them.  Better yet – dance in them…

My mother always said “this too shall pass.”  Hearing this is one thing – believing it is much harder.  She never told me  how long or hard I’d have to paddle to stay afloat sometimes.  I wish I knew then, what I know now.  What you resist – persists.

We need to learn to DANCE!!  What does this mean?  Trust in the process…let go of the outcome…stay present.  Breathe…smile…rest.  It’s about having peace of mind that all the pieces will fall into place – knowing all will be as it should be.  In…the…right…time.  Breathe…smile…rest.

Let the raindrops fall where they may.  If it weren’t for the rain…we’d never appreciate the rainbow.  It’s the yin and the yang. The bitter and the sweet.  The light and the dark.

Dance while you can…cause there might come a day…when you can’t.

Celebrating Beauty As A Lifestyle Workshop!

Sunday, 21. March 2010

The Fine Art of Self Care

  • Spend an evening learning how to celebrate your inner and outer beauty on a daily basis!
  • Create simple and pleasurable habits of self care  *
  • Feel better emotionally and physically
  • Have more energy, create better self esteem, and add more meaning to your life :-D

As women, we are always taking care of everyone else first.  What we don’t realize is –  we are no good to anyone if we are falling apart at the seams.  Taking time for self care is not a selfish act.  It is self preservation.  The positive energy gained from self care is like the ripple effect.  We feel so much better about ourselves when our emotional, mental and physical “tanks” are full – allowing us to take care of others with a much healthier attitude.  We can accomplish more, appreciate more, and have so much more gratitude!

Join me at MOYO Yoga Studio in Skippack , PA April 18th 7:00 – 8:30pm for a Women’s Evening Workshop.  Pre-registration is $10.  At the door $20.  Please call 610-584-1108 to register.

The quality of your life lies in your hands…see you on the 18th!

*  Bring your favorite journal with you for taking notes and writing exercises.

Accepting Change Gracefully

Tuesday, 9. March 2010

Change is hard.  The only constant in life…is change.  Sometimes it  feels like a beautiful rainbow after the storm, and sometimes it feels like a dark tunnel with no light ahead.  Either way, there is a silver lining.

Change comes in its own time – allowing for growth and rebirth.

Though hard to digest at times…there is an ebb and flow of life that is so graceful.  We get so caught up in how we think things should be, feel, look, or turn out that we miss so much of the “meantime”.  This is where grace is so abundant…

Every day is a new day – gratitude is your key to unlocking it.  Taking the time to recognize the endless beauty in all things and realizing there are blessings everywhere -  but it’s up to us to notice them.  This is what makes change bearable, graceful and in the end worthwhile.

Not always knowing where we’re going or where we might end up, but simply trusting in the process that all will be as it should be, allows us the room to breathe, and take in all that change has to offer.

Maybe simply changing our thoughts about change, is where we need to direct our focus.  You know what they say…when you change the way you look at things — the things you look at change.  :-D
